Theodore B. Starr — the history of the brand founded by Theodore B. Starr (1837–1907).
Started his career in the jewelry trade in 1853 at the age of 16, when he got a job as a messenger for a New York jeweler. After nine years of work, he was able to open his own business, and two years later entered into a partnership with Herman Marcus. This is how the jewelry company Starr & Marcus was born.
In 1877, Starr founded his own eponymous company. His store and products were regularly written about in the press, and the New York Times noted that “Starr’s establishment… has no parallel in this country, and probably in the world.”

The company created artistic modern silverware and jewelry, partly influenced by European trends, but also reflecting the mood and aesthetics of America at the time.

In 1907, Starr’s son joined the business, founded the company, and then sold it in 1918.
In 1923, Theodore B. Starr closed its doors for good.
