In the mid-19th century, the American company Pennington, Carter & Doremus was founded in Newark, New Jersey, USA. It was the forerunner of the future Carter, Gough & Co., founded back in 1841. During its history, the company underwent a number of name changes: the original name was changed to Carter, Howe & Co and others. The company’s activities ceased in 1922.

Carter, Gough & Co specialized in creating exclusive jewelry pieces in the Victorian, Edwardian styles, as well as in the spirit of Art Deco and Art Nouveau. The workshops used gold for coatings, exquisite enamel, pearls and various precious stones – among which a special place was occupied by work with amethyst. The distinctive sign of the company was the image of the letter “C” inscribed inside an arrow-shaped symbol.

In the 1850s, the company made a revolutionary contribution by becoming the first in the U.S. jewelry market to use the steam engine to automate manufacturing processes.
